Goh Chern has been given many opportunities to do public speaking since her secondary school days.
As a student at Xinmin Secondary School, Diana was a member of the school’s English Debate Team when she was selected as the contest’s Best Speaker at an intra-school debate final. Showing promise, she then went on to represent her school at various debating tournaments as her school team was crowned Champions at the North Zone Debating Championships.
Showing versatility as a speaker, Diana represented the National Junior College as a Master of Ceremony for Bursary Awards presentation ceremony at Singapore Buddhist Lodge, before an audience of more than 2000. She also emceed roles at the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled Singapore (MINDS) during various concerts held for the beneficiaries.
Beyond the school, Diana has also had opportunities to speak to large crowds. In 2007, she represented Singapore together with 9 other youth delegates at the East Asia Youth Leadership Forum held at Thailand, in conjunction with the ASEAN+3 Summit that year. She not only interacted and befriended many of the inspiring youths of ASEAN+3 nations but also had the chance to present the Youth Joint Statement in front of the forum of 150 youth leaders from 13 countries. In 2008, Diana was invited to ASEAN+3 Youth Festival as a guest speaker. In the same year, she was invited to give an inspirational speech at the inaugural Youth Achievers’ Forum 2008. She also took up the role of an assistant trainer during one of the leadership workshops held at Bukit View Secondary.
In 2007, Diana was nominated and selected by public votes as well as the National Youth Council as a recipient of the Stars of SHINE (Inspiration) award, presented by Mr. Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliament Secretary, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. She was featured on various forms of media – Channel 8, The Straits Times, Today, youth.sg as well as SGH and NHG newsletters as a youth role model. Later in the year, she was also featured in a 30 minute documentary on Channel 8 for her inspirational life journey. This July, she was also interviewed on-air on 98.7FM.
Having experienced and overcome several trials and challenges in life, Diana is determined to share her life story and inspire youths to better themselves. As a member of the NUS Toastmasters Club, Diana’s ability and spirit is well-recognized. She has been accorded consistently as the Best Speaker for presenting her project speeches as well as Best Table Topics at the Chapter meetings, in addition taking up facilitation roles at meetings within and outside the club.
