As a keen learner of everything, Mingyang is one who values the role of good stewardship in learning. His passion in education and efforts in learning paid off when he was rewarded with a place on the Dean’s List of his faculty at at the National University of Singapore.
Academic abilities aside, Mingyang had always sought to learn more about the role of communication amongst people, which is why he chose to study Psychology, with Mass Communications being the other option that he considered. He first saw the importance of communications when he worked as a freelance market researcher in the tuition industry. From the responses people gave to his questions, he found himself being able to assess every agency based on the way the staff spoke to him rather than what they said to him.
His term in National Service also enabled him to perceive good communications as being even more essential. As an training assistant for C3 Wing in Air Force School, he realized how communication had to be adaptive to situations as air traffic controllers communicated with pilots. Following which, he started to invest effort into improving his communication skills at every level as he perceives it to be a vital tool for every member of society.
Despite his love for sports, Mingyang chose to become a member of the NUS Toastmasters Club, where he actively tones his public speaking and leadership skills as a member of the Executive Committee. Wanting to maximize his learning, he consistently presented speeches and was accredited a ‘Competent Communicator’ by Toastmasters International in less than a year.
He currently serves as the Vice-President of Membership at the club and has led a few major recruitment projects, inspiring and growing the club to a record size of 170 members, becoming the largest Toastmasters club in South East Asia. He is also the current reigning Table Topics and Evaluation Speech Contest Champion, having won the very first contest that he participated in.
